Every fall I begin to prepare my playlists for the upcoming holidays. I listen to certain music according to my mood. During the month of October my mood is centered on one thing… Halloween! I have compiled a list of my top 13 Halloween songs that I listen to in order to escape the normalcy of my everyday playlists.
These are in no particular order…
Nightmare on My Street – DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince
I love most of the songs on this album because they all tell a story. This song in particular is great because it’s talking about Freddy Krueger which always brings my mind to Halloween. This song also reminds me of driving my little sisters and myself to school in my mom’s beige Ford Freestyle and bumping this album because my mom had it in the CD player. So thanks mom for helping me discover this Halloween gem.
Thriller – Michael Jackson
Now, you know you can’t go a Halloween without listening to a Michael Jackson classic. This song especially reminds me of Halloween because one Halloween my sisters turned off the lights, locked me in a basement room, and blasted this song because they knew the music video scared me. I cried uncontrollably and quite possibly peed myself. At least I can say that I have conquered my fear of this song and I can listen to it without fear coursing through my psyche.
Day-O (Banana Boat Song)
You might be thinking “hmm, this song moreso gives off summer vibes” but if you’ve seen Beetlejuice then your mind might have flashbacks to the dinner party scene where Julia was putting it down.
Somebody’s Watching Me -Rockwell
If feeling like someone is watching you isn’t scary then I don’t know what is. I just picture myself walking down a completely dark street with a flickering streetlight and yellow eyes lighting up all around me. On the flip side, I picture someone following me around everywhere and me discovering and punching him/her. Kind of like Brainy from Hey Arnold that always comes up behind Helga breathing all hard.
Superstition – Stevie Wonder
Honestly, just the beat of this song makes me picture a young girl smoothly walking down the school hallway with some pep in her step and all of the other kids are in awe while turning around in slow motion to watch her as she points at them with both hands while winking. The lyrics of the song are what produce the Halloween vibes though.
Monster Mash – Bobbie “Boris” Pickett & The Crypt-Kickers
One: this song is about monster’s so duh, Halloween. Two: the Groovie Goolies’ music video is fun to watch. Three: it brings me joy to try and copy the voices in the song. “It was a gave yard smashhh.”
Addams Family Theme Song
Yes. This counts as a Halloween song. Don’t fight me on this. *snap snap*
Werewolves of London – Warren Zevon
I don’t particularly like that a little old lady got mutilated late last night, but I do love to howl aahoooooooo!
Jump in the Line – Harry Bellafonte
Okay. Again, if you haven’t watched Beetlejuice then this might not make sense. however, if you have you might be like me and picture Winona Ryder’s floating dance moves. Ah, and then the ghost football players join in on the staircase. Yes. Halloween playlist material.
Ghostbusters – Ray Parker, Jr.
Since this song is about ghosts I thought that this song should be included on this list. Also, I would let my six year old nephew down if I didn’t include this song. He dances to this song on his wii and knows every move and lyric.
This is Halloween – Danny Elfman
Well, Halloween is in the name so I think this song is fitting. However, I only really watch this movie around Christmastime. This song is one that really helps me get into Halloween mode because it just affirms that it actually is Halloween.
I Put a Spell on You – Bette Midler
This song makes me think three sister witches, a talking black cat, and a boooooooook. Halloween just wouldn’t be the same without hearing this song from one of my favorite movies to watch during Halloween – Hocus Pocus.
Time Warp – Rocky Horror Picture Show
Rocky Horror Picture Show gives us a Halloween song that we can dance too. I likes that. And then once the song is over you will be screaming, “let’s do the time warp again!”
What songs are on your playlist to escape the monotony of the music you listen to every day and get into Halloween mode?
